The Khan el Khalili Bazaar

The Khan el Khalili Bazaar was founded in the late 1300’s and ever since it has attracted locals and tourists to its intoxicating charm. Cairo has always been an important trade centre, and this tradition continues today in the bustling maze of alleys that forms Khan al-Khalili Bazaar.

Khan El Khalili Bazaar

One of the pleasures of the Khan market is to get lost in the bazaar and take in the sights, smells and sounds of life in all its chaos and glory. You can shop for carpets, camels, shoes, books and veils or whatever else takes your fancy. Leave your valuables behind in your hotel and immerse yourself in a world that has changed little in hundreds of years.

The Khan itself is relatively small, and is largely devoted to tourists. There are souvenirs here for every taste and budget: spices, jewellery, inlaid mother-of-pearl boxes and backgammon sets, water pipes, scarves, lamps, delicate perfume bottles (and the perfume to go in them)… you can even get yourself a singing, dancing camel!

Khan El Khallili01

The perfume shops of the bazaar are particularly memorable; suffused with spice and floral scents and decorated with plush Oriental carpets and beautiful crystal chandeliers they’re run by clerks who can mix any fragrance you desire.

Be warned, though, the traders here are black belts at haggling – so be firm, but maintain your sense of humor and enjoy the experience for what it is.
To get away from the souvenir shops head west and you’ll have a more authentic souq experience. The main goods sold are gold, silver, copper, perfume, spices, and cloth.

At the east end of the Khan is al-Hussein Square, home to the beautiful al-Hussein Mosque. The western end is bound by Muizz li-Din Allah Street. You can head north to Bab al-Futuh, past Islamic monuments such as al-Aqmar Mosque and Beit al-Souhaymi, or south towards Bab Zwayla and the Street of the Tentmakers. Leading west from Khan al-Khalili towards Ataba is al-Muski Street, a crazy local market that is well worth exploring.
This Egyptian bazaar is a great place to while away an entire day. The sights and sounds are enduring examples of the Egyptian culture that have been going on for hundreds of years.

For a break from the heat, there are plenty of coffee shops along the street. Egyptians like their coffee strong, so be prepared for quite a jolt from their favored drink, but also prepare for some of the most exotic tasting coffee you’ll ever have.

One of the must visit coffee shop here is the al-Fishawi Coffee Shop with a water pipe and a strong Turkish coffee. This café has been open 24 hours a day since 1773 and Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz is said to have visited every day up to his death in 2006.

Drinking Hibiscus, Karakare, Helba, or any of the various typical Egyptian beverages, is a pleasant experience for visitors and guests to get a real taste experience. For smokers, there is the Shisha, or water pipe, to be tried.

Having exhausted the Khan el Khalili, two other markets close by complete Cairo’s Market Triangle. These are the market on al-Azhar Street and, further to the west, Muski Market. Furthermore, you’ll find a bunch of gold and silver sellers in the streets between these markets, should you really want to splurge.

Like every Cairo bazaar, much of the Khan el Khalili bazaar doesn’t open on Sundays. Most sellers do open on Fridays, however, even though it’s considered a holy day in Islam.

Here are some bargaining tips that will come in handy at the bazaars:

•              Feel free to accept tea from the shopkeeper if it is offered, it doesn’t obligate you to buy and it’s a nice custom.
•              Halve the first asking price and start from there.
•              Stay polite and have a sense of humor while bargaining, it is supposed to be fun.
•              Walking away is a good way to get the price down quickly.
•              Convert the asking price in to your own currency before you end up haggling like crazy over what turns out to be a few pennies.
•              Pay what you think the item is worth and don’t worry too much if others have paid less.
•              If the price is too high or you don’t want an item just leave, there will be plenty more opportunities just around the corner.

Places to visit in Aswan

Philae Temple

The Philae Temple complex, once located on Philae Island, was threatened by flooding when the High Dam was built. With international donor assistance, the temples were moved and reconstructed on Agilka Island, where they can be viewed today. This beautiful temple complex was constructed during the 3rd century BC, and the main temple was dedicated to the goddess Isis.

Aswan High Dam

The world famous Aswan High Dam was an engineering miracle built in the 1960′s.  The dam is 11,811 feet long, 3,215 feet wide and 364 feet high.   It provides irrigation and electricity for the entire country of Egypt along with the old Aswan Dam. The High Dam created a 30% increase in the agricultural land in Egypt.  The electricity producing capability of the dam doubled Egypt ‘s supply.

Sound and Light Shows in Aswan

The Sound and Light Show of the Temple of Philae was inaugurated in 1985. Spectators are taken on a Nile cruise and listen to how the temple was rescued and restored.

The show describes the history of Aswan , the grandeur of Nubia and the sacredness of the Nile . The show is presented in English, French, Spanish, German, Arabic and Italian.

The Aga Khan Mausoleum

This pink granite mausoleum in Aswan was built for the spiritual leader of the Ismailis, a Shiite in 1950.
The Aga Khan was educated in Europe and succeeded his father in 1885 to become the 48th imam. His son succeeded him upon his death in 1957, and then by his grandson, Karim, Aga Khan IV. Members of this sect consider themselves to be the direct spiritual descendants of the Fatimids.

Granite Quarries

The Granite Quarries provided much of the red granite used for ancient temples and colossi. Most of the granite used in the ancient Egyptian tombs, temples and obelisks came from the quarries in the Aswan area. Around these quarries are many inscriptions, many of which describe successful quarrying projects. Of particular interest is the Unfinished Obelisk located in the Northern Quarry. Because it has a large crack it was never used it would have weighed over 2.3 million pounds

Kalabsha Temple

The Kalabsha Temple was moved in 1970 to its present location in Nubia . It was the largest freestanding temple in Egyptian Nubia and the temple is typical of the classical Ptolemaic period with pylons, courtyard, hypostyle hall and three-room sanctuary.  The courtyard inside the pylon once had columns on three sides.
There is also a small chapel, which can be reached from stairs in the first chamber, which then descend from the roof into the chapel set inside the wall.As you leave the temple, be sure to note the rear wall with images of Mandulis with his vulture-feathered cloak.

5 Fun Facts about Ancient Egypt

When someone says Egypt what first comes to mind is Mummies, Pyramids, Temples and Belly dancers  however here are 5 fun facts about Egypt you may never have heard about before today.

Read on …

1.)This is quite disgusting to imagine but in ancient Egypt when a body was mummified, its brain was removed through one of its nostrils and its intestines were also removed and placed in jars called canopic jars. The only internal organ that was not removed was the heart, because Egyptians considered it to be the seat of the soul. Thank God we don’t practice mummification after death anymore.

2.)Pepi II of Egypt was known for many things but did you know that in order to deter flies from landing on him the Pharaoh always kept several naked slaves nearby whose bodies were smeared with honey.

3.)“Death will slay with his wings whosoever disturbs the peace of Pharaoh.” This was an inscription found on a clay tablet in Tut’s tomb. Twenty people associated with the discovery died shortly after the tomb opening. It is believed that they were cursed.

4.)Cats were very sacred to the Egyptians. In the event of a fire, cats would be rescued from the building before any humans. This is something that will make our animal activists happy for sure.

5.)Did you know about the Romeo and Juliet Twist towards the end of the Egyptian dynasty?
Mark Antony stabbed him self with his sword on the battlefield outside Alexandria while trying to fend of his former country men. He was brought to the tomb where Cleopatra had locked her self in, and died in her arms…After the war was over and Egypt was defeated Cleopatra, the last ruler of Egypt who was imprisoned in her own palace tricked Octavian into visiting Antony’s Tomb. She had someone bring her some poisonous snakes and incited them to bite her. Caesar ordered that the two lovers be buried together.

The Black Pharaoh

Egypt was ruled by many well-known  pharaohs but did you know about the Black Pharaohs who ruled Egypt for 100 years but their role as leaders has been largely kept in the dark because of racism.
The Nubian kings, who came from an area of Africa that is mostly present-day Sudan, became the country’s 25th dynasty and reunited Egypt, which had been torn apart by warlords.
National geographic Magazine claims the true impact of these rulers has never been widely accepted because European powers colonized the region in the 19th century and the role of the “darker skinned” conquerors was seen as irrelevant.
“The neglect of Nubian history reflected the bigoted world view of the times.”
The story of the Nubians proves that African civilization was thriving in the ancient world, and intermingling and intermarriage with Egyptians was also reasonably common.
Some studies also have found that Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankhamun’s grandmother, the 18th-dynasty Queen Tye, may have had Nubian heritage.
Piye was the first of the so-called black pharaohs—a series of Nubian kings who ruled over all of Egypt for three-quarters of a century as that country’s 25th dynasty. Through inscriptions carved on stelae by both the Nubians and their enemies, it is possible to map out these rulers’ vast footprint on the continent.
The black pharaohs reunified a tattered Egypt and created an empire that stretched from the southern border at present-day Khartoum all the way north to the Mediterranean Sea.
When Piye died at the end of his 35-year reign in 715 B.C., his subjects honored his wishes by burying him in an Egyptian-style pyramid, with four of his beloved horses nearby. He was the first pharaoh to receive such entombment in more than 500 years. A pity, then, that the great Nubian who accomplished these feats is literally faceless to us.
Images of Piye on the elaborate granite slabs, or stelae, memorializing his conquest of Egypt have long since been chiseled away. On a relief in the temple at the Nubian capital of Napata, only Piye’s legs remain.
We are left with a single physical detail of the man—namely, that his skin was dark.
Today Sudan’s pyramids—greater in number than all of Egypt’s—are haunting spectacles in the Nubian Desert.
While hundreds of miles north, at Cairo or Luxor, curiosity seekers arrive by the busload to jostle and crane for views of the Egyptian wonders, Sudan’s seldom-visited pyramids at El Kurru, Nuri, and Meroë stand serenely amid an arid landscape that scarcely hints of the thriving culture of ancient Nubia.
